Event Details
Join guest presenters from Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center to investigate the life of Monarch Butterflies. We will learn what makes a butterfly an insect and why insects like butterflies are important for the health of our ecosystem. We will examine what makes Monarchs unique from other butterflies and what is causing the decline of their populations. Participants will learn how to help Monarch butterflies by participating in an ongoing community science project. We will go outside to search for insects in the garden and practice using insect nets. Each participant may also create their own fluttering paper butterfly to take home. This program will be instructed in English and Spanish and is open to families of school-age children in grades K and up. This event will be held in the Youth Services Department on the 2nd floor of the Main Library. No registration is required. Acompañemos a los invitados especiales del Centro de Educación Ambiental de Jacobsburg para investigar la vida de las mariposas monarca. Aprenderemos qué hace que una mariposa sea un insecto y por qué los insectos como las mariposas son tan importantes para la salud de nuestro ecosistema. Examinaremos qué es lo que diferencía a las mariposas monarca de otras mariposas y qué es lo que está causando el descenso de su población. Posteriormente, cada persona podrá crear su propia mariposa de papel para llevar a casa. La audiencia aprenderá cómo puede ayudar a las mariposas monarca al mismo tiempo que participa en un proyecto científico comunitario. Saldremos a buscar insectos al jardín y practicaremos el uso de la red. Este programa se impartirá en inglés y en español, y es apto para familias con niños en edad escolar de jardín de niños en adelante.
